Not-so-merry Christmas card and some blah blah

I had this plan to do the non-traditional colors on a Christmas card. Hmmm. Not entirely happy with it. Blech. And yet I'm posting it anyway...aren't you happy about that.

Let me entertain you with something else. Nope, I got nothing. My life is a little mundane right now. Not that I'm complaining, it just doesn't make for any blogging excitement.

Let's see....scrapbooking-wise I'm almost done with my projects for my September workshop. I'll post them when they are all done. I'm also contemplating doing a Christmas card workshop, but I'm not sure how to do it. I want to do four different designs with some embellishments and techniques, but I also want something I can do with newbies. So I need to have a workshop that will be easy for me to explain and float from table to table. Boring stuff I know...

Oh I know something I can tell you. I bought some remnant fabric at Wal-Mart today to give Little d for her birthday. She is so into fashion and cutting paper that I think she will have fun cutting real material (and it was cheapo-bonus!) And while I was there, ahem, I, uh, you know, bought some cute buttons for myself. Ahem.

Politics. Bleeeeecchhh. Seriously I am so tired of it I could scream.

Top Chef! Woo-hoo!! It's back on and I am loving it!! Speaking of fun stuff to watch. D and I are thinking of joining one of those movie club thingys like Netflix. Do any of you have any opinions about which one is the best? We only would probably watch 2-4 movies a month. And we're cheeeap! Ha!

Pregnancy tests. I bought one (pack of three) today. Just in case. You'll be the first to know. Ha, okay no you'll be like the sixth or seventh, but considering how big my family is, that's pretty high up there! Yeah and I'm not one of those people who can wait until the first trimester is over. So I pretty much blurt it to everyone as soon as the test shows up. I didn't learn my lesson from having a miscarriage. I figure the more people that know about it, the more people that can pray everything goes well, right?

Remember my post on faxing John the Baptist? Well I called to set up the date for the baptism and guess what other thing I am required to do? Pay $20. It's a registration fee. For a sacrement. I hope they don't require someone on their death bed to fork over a fee before performing last rites. And since with Little d we gave the priest a gift of $50, I guess this time we can just consider the fee his gift, right? Oh and PS I only paid $26 dollars for Little m's dress.

Okay I guess that's all the randomness I can stuff in one post for a while. Thanks for all your sweet comments on my MIL post. Sorry to hear there are so many of you going though MIL drama as well.

Butterfly birthday card {in purple}

My aunt has had a rough year with her surgeries and recovery. Her birthday is coming up, so I wanted to send her a card using her favorite color purple. She also has a backyard full of birds and butterflies, so I thought she might like a butterfly on her card.

And yes I am still hooked on the folded paper ribbon. My daughter saw this and said "why didn't you use real ribbon?" Oh well, I still like it.

The Great Blow Up of '05 (otherwise known as the longest post in history)

Okay you all have been waiting months and months for this post right? I'm going to try to make it as short, yet as explanatory, as possible.

It mostly started with the birth of my daughter. I was a new mom and in case you missed the title of my blog...fiercely protective of her. I never knew what a mother's instinct was, much less how it would just completely take over my life. My husband, God bless him, finally got it. It took a little adjusting for him to realize that I was a completely different person. No longer did I care if his dinner was waiting on him when he walked in the door-perfectly timed everyday. My new purpose in life was to be a mom. Don't worry, our marriage is stronger than ever. I've also learned to divide myself into neat little compartments. Mom. Wife. Self. Pretty much always in that order. And Self usually gets the leftovers, but Self loves being a Wife and a Mom, so it works out.

My mother in law (MIL) is... Whew. Well she can be a bit of a drama queen, but I overlook that because my dear Memaw is one as well. So I'm accustomed to it. She's also one who thinks she knows the right way to do everything. Please tell me you know someone like that. I know a few myself. And I am quite happy to nod politely and ignore her advice.

Then there is my future former sister in law. Hmmm what initial should I dub her with? FFSIL? 'kay. She is a piece of work. Here's a little story about the first time I met her.

It was Christmas at D's parents' house. The year we got engaged. D had talked to his brother and his brother told him that we were not going to exchange gifts with them that year. No problem. I-all susie homemaker like-baked sugar cookies for them.

FFSIL walks in with armfuls of gifts and starts handing them out. D says 'hey I thought we weren't giving each other gifts.' She says...and I'm not kidding...'oh I'm not the kind of person that can just NOT bring a gift.' I knew in that very instant who she was.

Now that you know the players, here's the back story:

D and his brother are not close at all. They talk to each other maybe twice a year. We see each other usually only at Christmas. It's like far flung relatives who don't really see eye to eye very much. And well FFSIL and I could not be more different. She is completely career oriented. She travels out of the country on business (whether her kids are sick or not.) "I'd go crazy if I had to stay at home with my kids all day," has come out of her mouth. I very diplomatically did NOT say 'yes and likely they would too.' On a side note: Do you find that people who proclaim themselves to be very open minded are usually not really open minded at all?

MIL and, for that matter, FIL fell in love with her. They thought she could do no wrong. MIL talked incessantly about FFSIL this and FFSIL that. When grand kids came along it was no different. A (the firstborn granddaughter) was the constant topic of conversation. When MIL came here she would actually interrupt a story I was telling about Little d to tell one of her own with A. {It was so bad that until recently Little d thought MIL was A's mom.}

Little d began getting carsick at nine months. Now I guess to some moms that's no big deal. Some moms would just hand their kid a bucket and go. Suffering kid or no. I don't have that in me. And it's not just because I don't like cleaning Spaghettio chucks out of upholstery. Why would I want to take a miserable child on a two-plus hour trip (one way) when she is eleven months old and has no concept of why she is dry heaving for two hours (one way) in the car? There you have the reason why we didn't attend A's second birthday party.

And now we are at the start of the Great Blow Up of '05.

MIL tells D that R (that's his brother) is so upset that we are not attending A's party that he is crying about it. Crying...and to his mother no less. Instead of calling D and venting or handling like a normal adult sibling would do. Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

I decided to talk to FFSIL about it mom to mom. I mistakenly thought she would understand if I just explained it myself. So I composed an email. She was in Guatemala on business so it was the best way to reach her. I just explained that I wanted to speak to her mom to mom and to explain that I didn't feel it was fair to Little d to take her on such a long trip with her issues in the car.

Talk about your poking a hornet's nest.

She waited a week to respond. (Her reason: she was busy at work with late dinner meetings and what not.) She attacked me on so many points for over two pages of single spaced type that the carsickness issue only took up one paragraph. She attacked my IBS, she attacked the people "I surround myself with", she attacked my parenting skills, she attacked my relationship with MIL...the list went on and on. The big headliner though was the way we handled her nephew's death. (More on that later--Just know that he was killed in a car accident two days before I was induced with Little d.)

Well let me tell you people I was pissed. One, this is someone who , at that time, had seen me in person a grand total of maybe 10 times. Two, if you leave the country when your infant daughter is ill, you have no right to critique my parenting skills. Three, if I had my nose as far up my MIL's butt as you, there would be no room for you.

So I sat down to retort. D was so furious that he said it would not be wise at all for him to respond to her. Even though he really wanted to. And gosh I just re-read my letter back to her and it is juicy. I really should post it some time. Here's the portion about her nephew's death. (She felt that I sent the sympathy card too late.) Warning: it's a little graphic and long winded...

"The most important issue you raised in your letter is that you feel I was completely insensitive to ( ) death. If you think for one second that I was not thinking of your trauma and keeping your family in my prayers than it is clear that you do not know me at all. I am very sorry for what your family went through and continues to go though. I am sorry for not responding in the way you thought was proper. D spoke to his mother and asked where we could send flowers to the funeral and she insisted that she would handle it. Now should I have gone behind her back and sent the flowers anyway? I didn't want to offend (MIL) by ignoring her. The only explanation I have for the thank you note being late is: yes, my labor was easier than most people I guess..."

okay I decided to leave out the description of my birth story scares and my yucky infectional six month recovery to spare you endless reading. I described it for her because she had stated in her letter that since I had an easy delivery I should have been more on the ball with writing my sympathy note. It actually was not a 'thank you note' as she called it since it devoted one line to the thank you for the flowers and two paragraphs to sympathy. OK back to the letter...

"Add to that sleep deprivation and the pain of breastfeeding and the only thing that kept me sane was looking at my beautiful daughter. Sometime during this I sent you a thank you card. If it was during that first month than I think even Emily Post would agree I at least tried to come in under the wire of good taste. If you became angry over this than I am at least thankful that you had somewhere tangible to direct your anger during your time of grief."

Uhg. This is like only half the story. Are you still reading? Do you need a potty break? Get up stretch your legs...I'll wait.

So she didn't respond to my response. This is how I ended the letter...

"I'm not sure how you want to resolve this. We will never have the same views on many things, I accept that from you. In that vein I guess we can adopt a live and let live attitude. I have no problem with that. I have tried to apologize for offending you and angering you and I do so with sincerity. If you feel you can accept my apology and let go of the anger you've had for so long then I guess we are kind of starting with a clean slate. If you or R want to begin contacting us you are welcome to do so. If you are still too angry and need time that's okay too. We'll let you set the pace."

Alright. So now you know why me and ol' FFSIL are never gonna be BFFs. Ever. Never.

Entre vous, MIL. That's right. You didn't think she could NOT butt into this did you? She proceeds to tell D that not only are we not good parents, but she attacks my mom and dad. WTF? She says my mom eavesdrops on her and FIL when they are at my house. Oh man if you knew my mom you would laugh out loud at that. My mom spent a lot of time here helping me during my recovery from childbirth and when D's parents would come to visit (every two months or so) she would go upstairs to give them time to spend with us. MIL thought she was listening in. Ludicrous. I mean for starters, all they talk about is deer, rain, and cattle. Oh and the other granddaughter. Who would want to listen to that? And second, you can't hear what's going on downstairs when you are upstairs and THIRD MY MOM IS NOT A BUSYBODY!

She attacks my dad by acting like his job is so leisurely that he golfs all the time. Again I say WTF? First, when their gas station began slipping financially, he gave up golf. Now that he has another job, he only golfs because my uncle bought him a gift membership for Christmas. Not that it's any of her damn BUSYBODY business.

Plus she had acted so heinously during Little d's first birthday party and made everyone so uncomfortable that I was enraged. And I sat up until two in the morning of Little d's party and wrote her a searing letter. I am not going to type in that whole letter right now, so here are some highlights:
  • As you told me numerous times before D and I were married, if you ever interferred as your MIL did, that I should tell you to butt out. Now I'm telling you to butt out.
  • You told me that grandchildren will be spanked when they are at your house. No one will spank my child without my permission.
  • You think my parents are spending too much time here. The only person who needs to approve that is D and he enjoys spending time with them.
  • I cannot believe that you have sunk so low as to make personal attacks on my family.
  • I am also tired of your obsession over needing to be alone with Little d. My parents are happy to visit with us while playing with her and still she knows them well.
  • I am close to my family and will not change that for anyone. And if you hope to salvage any relationship with me whatsoever, you can accept that about me.

Thus began the great chill. I lost all respect for her. She did not apologize or even respond. Really and truly I will not only never trust her, I don't have respect for her. Here are some things she's done since.

When they were adding onto their house, she said something about me coming over to paint. I said I would as long as I weren't pregnant (we were trying for number two at the time.) When D called her to tell her I had the miscarriage she said "oh now she can come over and paint." Wow. Doesn't get much more cold hearted than that.

When I had my biopsy surgery, she wanted to babysit Little d. I had already arranged for my dad to do it. At the time Little d (18 mths) was extremely attached to my dad. {Little m is exactly the same way now.} When she found out we didn't need her babysitting services she became pissed and went to Houston to stay with R and FFSIL rather than come sit in the waiting room with her son whose wife was having a breast biopsy. She's a waaaarm fuzzy, that one.

There are other things, but those two in my mind are pretty unforgivable. Forget me for a minute. She has caused my husband so much grief in his life it's ridiculous. It's probably why he's so close to my parents.

But now. Oh lovely readers, now. I am the Golden one. FFSIL has hurt the favored son by divorcing him and suddenly MIL thinks I'm just peachy. FFSIL now can do no right. Everything and I mean everything is wrong with her.

Flip-flop.

It's funny because I've been at the party for hours, talking, popping hors d'oerves and mingling with the guests. R, MIL and FIL just got here.

Thanks for reading. Now go grab some Visine for your eyes!

Deja Vu?

I know this card is very reminiscent of yesterday's card, but I couldn't help it. The formula worked for me.

I needed to make a thank you card for my mother in law and since she likes blue and antiques I knew this paper and image would work great.

For the last seven years (save one) my mother in law has sent me a gift book. It's a Country Woman Christmas book. It always arrives at my door in late summer/early fall. She said she knows how much I like crafts so that's why she got it for me. And every year (save one) I've sent a thank you note.

I'm working on a post about the Great Blowup of '05. I think it's time you all knew what went down with my mother in law and future former sister in law.

Oops! I almost forgot to tell you the inside is going to say "Thank you sew much!" Get it? Sew? Hahahahahahaaa...

Here is something else pun-y for free. On today's Wizards of Waverly Place (Disney Channel)Harper (Alex's friend and quite the quirky dresser) was wearing some bright green Crocs adorned with stuffed frogs--I told you quirky dresser. I said "Hey look at those green Crocs! No wait they have frogs on them...they must be green Croaks!" It was completely lost on Little d. And no wonder really...pretty lame joke!

Baby Buggy Card

Leslie asked why I would ever use a rubber stamp. And I have to agree, I love my acrylic!! When I was deciding to sign up as a consultant I looked online at Stampin' Up products, and admit that their stamp images are divine. I love the style and the variety. BUT, acrylic is the only reason I ever got into stamping. When my BFF would drag me to these CTMH workshops I would groan every time we had to stamp. (I'm sure the consultant just loved me.) Then one time we used the clear stamps and suddenly I was hooked! I started buying stamps and bought a set of acrylic blocks off of eBay. (Little did I know that CTMH blocks are SO much more comfortable for stamping!)

But still I am drawn to some rubber stamps, so occasionally I buy some. Especially if it's in the clearance bin at Hobby Lobby! HA! But just a couple of days ago I saw this post by Diana Gibbs about using tacky glue to make rubber stamps adhere to acrylic blocks. She has a video demonstration. And you should check out her blog if you don't already, not only does she have great tips and cards, she's always sharing funny little anecdotes! Anyway, I'm thinking about trying her idea...have any of you ever tried it?

Oh yeah, the card... I made this using my new Puns from the Past. I put Scotch tape over the sentiment, inked the stamp, and then pulled off the tape. Then I stamped it onto my Vanilla Cream cs. Next I stamped Congratulation from another stamp set on that same piece of cs.

The ribbon is actually folded paper. I found that after I made the pleats it was better to crease them with my bone folder.

And how yummy is that K&CO. paper? Okay off to play some more...

Dream Home

Last year D and I were on the fast track to building the old dream home, but if you're a long time reader (hehehe I haven't even been blogging a year) then you know the story. Anyway, while goofing off and reorganizing my desktop, I came across some pictures of our house plans. You wanna see them?

Sure you do! You love to spend your free time deciphering complicated "Not For Construction" preliminary house plans right?

Here's what the artist rendition of a similar plan would look like. We weren't going to use brick on our exterior, and our garage will be flat across the front, not stair step like this one...

This is close to what the interior will look like. We are going to push the back wall out to equal what the porch on this one shows, and are making some changes in pantry and kitchen area.

These are our plans.

Here's a close up of the main living area and kid's bedrooms. The kitchen is in the center of the house.

This is a close up of the other side of the house, the kitchen and master suite and the guest and laundry area.

Here's the front, rear elevations, and the roof top picture.

Ah. Some day, some day. :)

Now my hands smell like cinnamon!

This week at Sparkle's Creations, we were challenged to use hot chocolate, tea or coffee imagery on our Christmas card. I loved that idea! Nothing reminds me of warm cozy times more than hot cocoa!

My mom used to get us a Christmas mug every year and we would drink our hot chocolate in it for our Christmas breakfast--while waiting impatiently to open presents! Here's my warmest wishes card:

It's so hot here in Texas (and dry...did I mention?) that it's hard to think of cozy winter mornings, but I did try my best. I even sprinkled some real cinnamon into the Liquid Applique 'whip cream'. Which explains the title of this post...

Thanks for stopping by!

Okay on to the goodies. I order some Stampin Up! stuff from my blogging buddy Katie Brooks.
This is Fifth Avenue Floral. {I have to tell you I still have a panic about lining up the rubber on the blocks.}

Here's a stamp I have wanted for so very long called Puns from the Past. I know I will be using this one very soon. I love the images!!

Another thing I've wanted forever...the spiral edge punch.

And to top it all off Katie made this lovely card for me! Isn't it beautiful!!

Grandma's Birthday Lunch

A few weeks ago when it was my Grandma's birthday, a bunch of the girls got together to have lunch at Olive Garden. Lunch was good, service was great, company was awesome.

My BFF emailed some pictures awhile back so I thought I would share...

My blue eyed Grandma.

The grand-daughters in attendance. Believe me there are many many more of us. I'm in orange, Lindsay is the other one on the back row. My BFF is in the center. And I have no idea what made Grandma look so freaked out.

Me, Lindsay and an aunt at the table.

Deciding what to order, Mom's in plaid.

Grandma with some of her daughters in law.

We're a rowdy group. And we like to gesture with our hands...

My BFF and Grandma

Grandma wanted to celebrate her birthday by buying us all a lottery scratchoff!

I wish we could do this every week!

Who called the cops?

This morning we got a visit from our friendly city po-po. {That would be police for you not in the know.}

"Mr. Sutton?" The officer asked my husband.

"No. It's not." D replied. Then he got all irate with the police trying to arrest him in his own home and so he called the cop a racist and I had to go pick him up downtown...

No wait that's not what happened. D got his ID. Officer Friendly checked it. They had received an alarm call from our home security system. Turns out the previous owner, Mr. Sutton, has not updated his address and apparently is still paying for alarm monitoring. If not here, somewhere. Likely it's somewhere and likely where ever that is had an alarm go off this morning. We got it all cleared up with the alarm company. Our alarm works. And we have had it go off a couple of times in the last eight years, so I know they do have our stuff all correct.

Mr. Sutton, where ever he is, hopefully has his stuff straightened out now too. ADT was supposed to call him and clear that up too.

Meanwhile, I asked D why the cop didn't want to come in and check things out after seeing the state of our living room. Clothes scattered everywhere, footstool overturned...I guess the cop has two wild monkeys at his house too so nothing looked out of place here. Nothing to see here folks, keep on moving, nothing to see...

A new blog (to me) and blog candy...

While surfing I stumbled across someone's post of Little Princess Cards' blog candy. Even if you don't want to sign on for the blog candy, you should check by and see her unique creations! She really has a beautiful style.

And she is offering some yummilicious blog candy!

Here color challenge...where are you color challenge?

Okay. One of three things have happened...

(1) I have officially lost my mind.
(2) I dreamed there was a color challenge featuring brown turquoise and neutral.
(3) There is a color challenge out there featuring those colors AND it's hiding from me.

I think choice one is ahead in the polls, but what do polls show you anyway?

Good thing I combined TWO challenges for this card. Ha! Other than my apparently fictitious color challenge, I used Mojo Monday's #99 Sketch.

I also needed a card for my parents who are celebrating their wedding anniversary on the 13th. They actually got married on Friday the 13th, isn't that cool? They got married in 1971, you do the math on how long they've been married.

While we're on the subject of me being loony. I don't know if it's from living in Texas and hearing Spanish pronunciations alot or what, but every time I see "Mojo" I think in my head Moho. {I hope that's not a bad word in Spanish.} It's just the "j" is pronounced "h" in Spanish right? Like Julio is pronounced Hoo-lio. Okay enough carrying on by me. You all have a great day!

ETA: I found it!! I found it!! It's the Pink Elephant Challenge! I've never played along before so that's why I had trouble finding it again. Ahhh. Good to know I'm not completely bonkers!!

Details: all CTMH unless noted

Paper: stripe, dot, and pattern from Perfect Day Level II, brown print (K&Co.) cream and dk brown from stash

Stamps: Say It In Style

Traveler's Inspiration Challenge # 6

What a beautiful picture this week at Traveling Mama! (Okay they are all beautiful I admit it.) This picture was taken in Ireland.

Guess what? I have a bridge story. There is a certain bridge on the road from POC to here, where if you look to the right you see a huge tree growing over the water with some large stones cascading down to the water's edge. I can't help but look at that view every time I take that road. I don't know why that relates to this picture, except it is a pretty view and, you know, it's a bridge scene.

Anyway. From this photo inspiration, I was drawn to the colors and the "scallops" of the bridge. Here's my card...

I sponged the ink onto the stamp to give it a softer look. I had to play with it on several scratch pieces of paper before I came up with this particular variation. I am so happy with how it finally turned out that I think I may base a workshop item on this technique in the future.
Thanks for stopping by!

Jake bites the dust...or in this case, water.

Our other goldfish, Jake, passed away this morning. He didn't play dead as long as Brenda Hannah.

He is survived by algae, fake plastic plants and rocks. Lots and lots of rocks.

Rest in peace Jake.

Also I finished cutting paper for my workshop today, so tomorrow I can play along with some challenges during naptime! Yeah!!

Also too, there are no immediate (or even not so immediate) plans to replace Jake.

I dare you...

to listen to this song and not end up with a smile on your face...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYhrYHmUPn0&feature=related

"I tried to be chill but you're so hot that I melted..." Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Nighty-night.
